Description: Berlin    Berlin offers outdoor cafes, museums, palaces and sites of historic interest to accompany an exciting and challenging race experience.   This new event, started in 2013, features a race start, finish and transition area that takes place in what was once East Berlin.  During the swim, the athletes will touch the old border between East and West Berlin.  The bike course heads through the city to the Grunewald Forest, then heads back to Berlin onto the former airfield at Tempelhof Park.  The run course likewise begins on the former airfield before heading through Hasenheid Park and returning to the finish, which will also be on the airfield.  Before it closed in 2008, Tempelhof Airport was one of the oldest commercial airports in the world, and was renowned as one of the three iconic pre World War II airports (along with London's Croydon and Paris' Le Bourget). Also close to the race site is the famous East Side Gallery, a 1.3 km section of the Berlin Wall, which is made up of a series of paintings designed as an international memorial for freedom. There are 30 qualifying slots to the IRONMAN World Championship 70.3.    .
