Distance: 70m
Description: Kansas There's a reason the Oread IRONMAN 70.3 Kansas attracts the sport's best athletes. Experience its electricity for yourself by lining up in Lawrence. Staged in the quintessential American college town of Lawrence, Kansas, this popular IRONMAN 70.3 regularly lures pros like Chrissie Wellington and Tim DeBoom. Competitors at all levels find this course as beautiful as it is challenging, while spectators feel welcomed by the events easily traversed open layout and scenic small town setting. Of course, it's partly the allure of a friendly, well executed event and partly its fortuitous timing that draw athletes far and wide: Since 2008, Lawrence has offered 70.3 athletes a prime chance to race a mid summer event in anticipation of full IRONMANs scattered throughout the summer and fall. Home to the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University, downtown Lawrence boasts annual music festivals, local art galleries and rustic campgrounds. The University of Kansas campus is also home to the KU Natural History Museum and Spencer Museum of Art, both renowned for their stately Romanesque architecture. At Clinton State Park, athletes have the opportunity to reserve more than 400 campsites next to the transition and finish line. The race begins with a 1.2 mile swim in Clinton Lake, a popular recreational area for boating, fishing and water sports. Athletes will complete one loop, entering and exiting the water at the South Boat Dock. After a short, 20 yard run to transition, the 56 mile bike course ventures through the rolling terrain of Southwest Douglas County. Athletes praise the varied course, since they encounter winding, flat stretches of road as well as steep pitches and challenging hills. To local cyclists, this includes the “Iron Cross,” the intersecting county roads of 1023 and 458. A two loop, 13.1 mile run through Clinton State Park Campground will bring the day to a close. It is here that athletes may catch a glimpse of white tail deer, quail and turkeys, since native wildlife is abundant. And since this is Kansas, after all, you can also look forward to the support of Dorothy, the Scarecrow and Tin Man cheering you on at the finish. There are 40 qualifying slots to the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Mont Tremblant, Quebec, Canada. *The Oread IRONMAN 70.3 Kansas is also a Regional IRONMAN TriClub Championship race. In addition to "members only" special events on site, athletes who are part of a triathlon club or team earn bonus points for their club towards the prestigious IRONMAN TriClub Annual Podium Award.
